Round of applause for these HEROES! My friends and clients Steve and Stephanie Allen helped a homeless mother and her child (see story below) find a place of belonging through their Issaquah home purchase and Chapman Homes partnership with Family Promise!
Introducing Karen and Elliot:
How did you first come to Open Doors Family Shelter?
"I remember I was terrified my first night and I called Open Doors and I got a staff person on the phone. And I was like, "But what if you turn me away?" And I was told on the phone, "If you have your baby with you, we will never turn you away. "And those were the most comforting words that I had ever heard in my situation. That's what brought me here is knowing that I had somewhere where I was already accepted and [they] didn't even know us. I hadn't even made it through the door yet, and I was already accepted here with my daughter which means that no matter who you are or what situation you're in, there's always an open door."
Elliott took her first steps at the shelter. What did that feel like for you?
"It was amazing. And I think the most important thing for me, was that she had the space to take those first steps in. If I had let our lives progress the way they were and not brought us to Open Doors, she might not have been able to take those first steps at all. But because we were here, she had a clean environment to even want to make that adventure. It's amazing to watch her blossom."
What does Open Doors mean to you?
I would say that the support that we have now is stronger at this point in our lives than we've ever had. And I think that's important for my daughter. Not only do we have people that are helping us get housing, but we are building relationships that we can have for the rest of our lives... It takes a village to raise a child, and now I have a village to help me raise mine.
